A Grand read

Refreshing

I am delighted to share with you a wonderful read! Yes I am still reading and finding good worth while books. This short book has three sections. “Knowing God as Triune” contains the bulk of the book and establishes Owen’s focus on communion with the Trinity.

“Heavenly Mindedness and Apostasy” places emphasis on public worship and the ways that believers can both cultivate and destroy it.

“Covenant and Church” most directly addresses the church’s worship under the New Covenan

This book is part of the “Profiles in Reformed Spirituality” series, edited by Joel Beeke and Michael Haykin, which aims to, “introduce the spirituality and piety of the Reformed tradition by presenting descriptions of the lives of notable Christians with select passages from their works.” This was indeed well done and worth the read.

There is much to commend the book. The editor has updated some of the language of Owen and most importantly, added some paragraph markers making the flow of thought a little easier. The selections do serve as a nice introduction to Owen's writings, as they are usually less than three pages. The majority of the book is Owen's text without much commentary. who needs to comment on sch a great writer."There is no death of sin without the death of Christ." ~ John Owen

Frustrated

Road Trip: The Journey to Life, Love, Learning, Labor and Leadership

I dislike having to do two negative reviews in a row but some how I have to. I was told : This book will help you:
  • Deepen your faith with seven core values to guide you through the five big decisions of young adulthood.
I am sorry I never felt  myself   having  been touched by this book or a desire to read or share with some one else.
  • Enhance your godly passion for dating, marriage, child-raising, and family life.
This section bothered me because I am not quite sure what the author means when he speaks of dating.
  • Strengthen your abilities to handle academics, worldview, and campus life.
  • This was an ok, section but not my take on life.

  • Increase your career prospects with a road map to craftsmanship.
  • Good chapter for  men but for  women it  is hard for them to have a career and be a mother. I wonder what the author thinks of  mothers working.

  • Expand your impact on your world!
I am sad to have to let  people know i would not waist ones tome on this volume

Sadly

I tried to like this but the songs ere to up beat for me.

The music chosen for the new series of releases is a mixture of old and new, traditional and original, slow and fast. Some of the tunes on this newest CD (His Kids United Christmas) include:

*Here We Come A-Caroling
*Jingle Bell Rock
*All I Have to Give
*Away in the Manger
*Christmas Time is Here
*I Hope This Gets to You

I like Christmas music but  know this is just not for my family and I.,But this is an album for kids who are used to hearing pop music sounds, so there are definitely some jazzy, hip-hop sounding pieces. “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” is a pop rendition with a very strong beat; I guess i like traditional best. i know other will enjoy but I st cant recommend.

Fail- Proof Marriage book

This a very uplifting marriage book that would make a perfect gift for newly weds at shower, wedding or as a one month anniversary gift, I like how the author states we are not to try and change our husbands. As for me being single it  was good to because I too some time  argue my points on small matters. Note this has some  material in it not for younger folk.

Seeking God together is the starting point. "If you put God first together, he will absolutely grant you the kind of marriage he wants you to have. He delights in doing it. A very refreshing read. Not   at all  negative but very uplifting. I will most surely keep some of their ideas in a note book to be used one day when married!

The authors state In this book, Amy and I would like to share with you five decisions that will fail-proof your marriage. If you make these decision, you can and will have the marriage God wants you to experience." After you read this book you will change the way you see marriage. This book was incredible! A definitely must read.  I liked how they talked about the importance of marriage vows, seeking God first, and not wanting to change your spouse.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. Best cookbook I will ever own!

A Kitchen in France

I was taken into the French farm world with is  magnificent book. One of the best!   It is divided by season with enchanting tales of  her life, French food and people accompanied by the most   beautiful pictures I have  ever laid  my eyes on or ever will!!
Yesterday  my mother, a friend and I sat down and had a delightful hour of  gazing at the  beautiful  pictures! My mother  kept saying " You should have given this to me for  my birthday!"

This is a very recent cookbook that  just came out this  month! Already I have a long list of satisfying recipes to try and today we will have  chicken, garlic soup, potatoes and vegetables. I truly enjoyed her stories of food, people, and life in the French countryside. Her husband’s beautiful photography not only augmented her stories but transported me to MedochoufarcieChou farçi
One of my favorite things to serve alongside meat is braised Savoy cabbage. Wonderful things happen when you cook this bitter vegetable with butter and let all the flavors come out. This little dish is really a variation of serving meat with cabbage—it’s all wrapped together in a pretty parcel. Serve it on its own, as a weekend lunch, or as an appetizer for a decadent feast. It’s the sort of dish that will make those at your table wonder, “If this is the starter, what are we having for the main course?”
Serves 6
1 head Savoy cabbage
Unsalted butter, for the pan
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, thinly sliced
2 carrots, finely diced
2/3 pound/300 g ground beef
2/3 pound/300 g good-quality pork sausage meat
2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
2 to 3 sprigs of thyme
1 bay leaf
½ teaspoon Rabelais spice or ground allspice
Fine sea salt and freshly ground pepper
½ (7-ounce/200-g) can whole tomatoes, crushed, with their juices
1 large egg
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Meanwhile, core the cabbage leaves and separate them, discarding any coarse outer ones. Cook the leaves in boiling water for 8 minutes. Drain and set aside to cool.
Grease the bottom and sides of a deep 7-inch/18-cm soufflé dish or charlotte mold with butter. Put a large pretty cabbage leaf, domed side down, in the dish. Top with another leaf and continue arranging the leaves one on top of another until the entire base and sides are covered. You won’t use all of the leaves at this point (reserve enough for 4 or 5 layers).
Heat the olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Cook the onion and carrots until softened, 4 minutes. Add the ground beef, sausage, garlic, thyme, bay leaf, spice and season with salt and pepper to taste and cook, stirring once or twice, until the meat is browned.
Pour in the crushed tomatoes, with their juices, and simmer until nearly all the liquid has been absorbed, about 5 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and let cool.
Preheat the oven to 350°F/180°C.
When mixture has cooled, discard the thyme and bay leaf. Add the egg and mix well.
Put a layer of about ½ inch/ 1 cm of the meat in the cabbage-lined dish and top with a cabbage leaf. Repeat until you’ve used all of the meat and filled the dish, about 4 layers. Finish with a final layer of cabbage, making sure to tuck in the leaf on all sides.
Bake for 40 minutes. To unmold, invert a plate over the soufflé dish, flip the plate and dish, and remove the mold. Serve immediately, cut into slices.
Note: Rabelais spice is a mix of allspice, nutmeg and curry – a traditional spice in France since 1820.

You really must   take a look at her blog as it is a taste of what her cookbook is! http://mimithorisson.com/
With beguiling recipes and sumptuous photography, A Kitchen in France transports readers to the French countryside and marks the debut of a captivating new voice in cooking.

I must say that I took a walk in her garden with the authur their  7 chidlren and 14  dogs and longed with a new pssion to visit France! Guess Who Noah's Boat

Who does not like a good children s book? My best friend has a little three year old ans a 1 year old who will be receiving this book and spending hours  having fun with it. That's how confidante I am that they will love this little book. It is a very sturdy board book that will stand up to little hands opening and closing the flaps many times! This book introduces the animals in Noah’s Ark, allowing children to guess which animal is hiding on each page.

This is very cute even though children do not learn  the true story of Noah and the flood. Nothing silly about it. With fun, rhyming text, each spread asks kids to guess which animal is heading toward the ark. The answer is revealed under the cleverly designed flap. With eye-catching illustrations and easy-to-understand text, Guess Who Noah'sBoat is sure to become a favorite.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kregel Publications in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Fearless Love - In the Midst of Terror

Fearless Love - In the Midst of Terror

wow! It  has been a week since I posted but  it was well worth the wait. I was deeply touched by this book! It made me reconsider many things about what true love
really is all about. I have always felt a concern for people of the Islamic faith and worried that American Christians are perhaps 'turning them off' by their lack of patience and love. This is a challenging, convicting, uplifting book. It will even challenge you to examine your heart! It will push you to seek God. I highly recommend this volume!

Fearless Love gives answers and tools to overcome terrorism with transformation. It is written for those curious about the basic teachings of Islam, how God gives faith that overcomes the fear of suffering and death, how to reach out to Muslims, and how a relationship with Jesus Christ brings us to a growing fearless love. The Biblical teaching of martyrdom is a call to purposeful living and a bold witness of faith. The fifty true stories of courageous Christians and illustrations will bring encouragement, inspiration, and hope in these precarious days. Fearless Love is formatted as an eight week study that works well in small groups, Sunday schools, or as a personal study. It concludes with seventeen practical suggestions in sharing God's love with others. Rediscovering Jesus' Spirit of Martyrdom is certain to demonstrate to the reader the profound power of  christian love.

Pastor Witt is the author of Fearless Love, In the Midst of Terror and founder of Spirit of Martyrdom ministries. He has spoken in over 2,000 churches and Christian ministries in the United States, traveled throughout Canada and Mexico, visited fifteen countries in Europe, and spent three weeks in Israel at the Holy Land Institute for Biblical Studies. He has traveled to 46 nations total in his lifetime. He spent ten years as a mission representative for The Voice of the Martyrs.
His assistance to the persecuted church has taken him to 18 restricted nations. He has brought support and encouragement to believers in Laos, Sudan, Iran, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. He has preached in underground church meetings and taught in Bible schools in Vietnam, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia. In China, he met with house church leaders and personally witnessed their triumphant faith and courage. Most recently, he met with persecuted Christians in Mauritania, India, Egypt, Israel, Iraq, and Colombia. His heart has been touched, and his life changed, by their actions of love and faithfulness to Jesus, even when facing death. Pastor Witt desires to share their stories. He states, “The Church in America functions in greatest maturity when relationally connected to the persecuted family around the world. Jesus is not returning for an arm or leg but for the Bride of Christ.”
David earned his Bachelor’s of Arts Degree, graduating with honors from Westmont College, a Christian liberal arts college in Santa Barbara, CA. He was ordained a Pastor and Minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ in 1994, and spent a total of fourteen years in youth ministry. During this time he helped start a network of Christian youth ministries in his local area of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and participated in the Ministerial Alliance of Steamboat Springs. Pastor Witt was actively involved in Young Life, leading mission trips to inner city Denver and the country of Mexico, and was the Area Coordinator for Concerts of Prayer and National Day of Prayer.
David’s wife, Cindy, holds a Bachelor’s of Arts
